Happy Wednesday, friends! I’m back with another Creative Insights and today I’m featuring the talented Kate Baird. When I came across her Instagram I fell in love with her creative posts and lettering shots, she is definitely an inspiration. Make sure to check out her portfolio, the websites she designs are beautiful.
Tell us a little bit about your business and what it means to you?
I started my business after graduating from college, getting married, and moving to a small town over the course of about six months. It’s evolved a lot over time, but these days I primarily build WordPress sites for women with creative businesses. Doing what I do and how I do it isn’t something that I really even knew was possible until I dove in, so ultimately I’m really grateful to be able to do what I do from home as my own boss.
What is one daily ritual you can’t live without?
I’m honestly not very good at the whole ritual thing- I tend to change things up a lot. But the one thing that I have a hard time giving up these days is going on a walk with the dog. I’ve always been the one to walk him and obviously I want him to be healthy, but I’ve become addicted myself- it’s the one time of day that I really can’t look at a screen and am left with only my own thoughts.
When you’re not creating where can we find you?
I love to run and do yoga. Watching TV with my husband is another big one for me.
What do you struggle with most when it comes to running your own business?
Managing projects long term so that there is enough overlap but not too much is always a constant struggle for me.
What’s one business goal you hope to achieve in 2015?
I ran my first ecourse last year and really enjoyed it, I’d love to try some new offerings like that again this year!
How do you treat yourself?
Any time spent away from my computer during the work week feels like a treat- I love my job, but my inspiration really comes from off of the screen. I love going for a long run and then walking the dog on a nice day. During the winter I’ve been trying to spend some more time drawing or writing by hand during my screen breaks.
Any tips for staying organized? Do you have any project management tools you can’t live without?
I actually have gone through so many phases of my to-do list that I wrote a blog post about it! These days I’m all about Basecamp and my Day Designer.
Favourite part of living in Washington D.C? Any favourite coffee shops / restaurants?
I live in the suburbs of Washington D.C., in the town where I grew up. Being close to my family is my favorite, but I like that a short drive east takes you to the city, and a short drive west takes you to lots of vineyards and beautiful scenery!
A genie grants you 3 wishes for your business, what are they?
Do you have any tips for someone wanting to get into graphic design?
Practice as much as you can, however you want! Designing whatever you want, especially at the beginning, is so important. It helps you learn what kind of design you enjoy and hone your personal style.
